In the context of the transition to renewable energies, topics such as alternative fuels and the assurance of electricity supply are more pressing than ever. How can the transition be accomplished and at the same time competitiveness can be ensured?
Power-to-X is an answer. These technologies use electricity (power) from renewable resources to produce gas, fuels or chemicals (“X”). Reducing the dependency on fossil resources goes hand in hand with replacing traditional technologies by new processes. One of the main challenges on this journey is to switch from continuous energy generation to fluctuating energy sources, like wind and solar. Power-to-X technologies will help to level energy supply and demand while simultenously opening up opportunities to replace fossil sources for material use. To enable the transition towards a sustainable energy system we need a holistic approach connecting the chemical sector, the mobility sector and the energy sector. Power-to-X is a key enabler for sector coupling and for creating an integrated energy system.
